Customer Service Representative resume example

Customer service is hired in volume, so your resume is read fast and against many near-identical ones. The candidates who get called have three things on the page: how much they handled, how well customers rated them, and evidence they improved something rather than only absorbing the queue.

What hiring managers look for first

  • Contact volume and channels — phone, chat, email, social
  • CSAT, NPS or quality score, with the target beside it
  • First-contact resolution and average handling time
  • Retention or save rate, where the role touches churn
  • Product or systems knowledge, especially regulated environments

Every figure below is invented, but the shape is the point: each bullet names what was owned, what changed, and the number that moved. It’s laid out in the Bergen template — switching template re-renders the same content rather than starting it over.

How to write it

Volume plus quality, in the same breath

Either number alone is ambiguous. High volume with no quality score suggests you rushed; a high CSAT with no volume suggests you had time nobody else gets. Together they're a complete picture, and almost no support resume presents them that way.

"~70 contacts/day across phone, chat and email; 96% CSAT against a 90% target" also does something subtle and useful: quoting the target shows you know what you were measured against, which reads as professionalism.

  • Contacts per day or week, by channel
  • CSAT, NPS or QA score, with the target
  • First-contact resolution rate
  • Average handling time, relative to the team
  • Save or retention rate, and revenue retained

Saves are the bullet that gets you paid more

Any support role that touches cancellations has a commercial dimension, and quantifying it moves you from a cost centre to a revenue protector in the reader's mind.

Estimate carefully and say that it's an estimate: "save 41% of cancellation calls, retaining an estimated $310k in annual revenue". The hedge costs nothing and the figure changes how the role is valued.

Improving the system is what separates senior from senior-in-title

Everyone in support answers tickets. The people who get promoted are the ones who made tickets stop arriving — a help centre article, a macro library, a bug they pushed engineering to fix, a process they redesigned.

"Wrote 48 help centre articles from recurring ticket themes, cutting repeat contacts on those issues 34%" is the highest-value sentence a support specialist can write, and it's usually describing work they were already doing informally.

Name the systems and the regulatory environment

Zendesk, Intercom, Salesforce Service Cloud, Freshdesk, Genesys — these are searched-for keywords, and support hiring is keyword-driven. List the ones you've used.

Regulated experience is worth more than it looks. Handling chargebacks under card-network deadlines, HIPAA-covered conversations, or regulator-referred complaints means you can be trusted with risk, and "zero compliance breaches in 3 years" is a claim few applicants can make.

Coaching and languages are underrated

If you onboard new hires, run quality calibration, or handle the escalations nobody else wants, you're already doing team-lead work. Say so with a count — "onboard and coach new hires, 14 to date" — because it's the evidence for the promotion you're applying for.

Second languages are directly monetisable in support and belong on the page as a skill, not buried at the bottom. Many contact centres pay a differential for them and screen for them explicitly.

Customer Service Representative skills and ATS keywords

These are the terms that appear in customer service representative postings, which is what an applicant tracking system matches your resume against. Take the ones that are genuinely true of you — a keyword you can’t defend in an interview costs more than the match is worth.

Mistakes that cost customer service representatives interviews

  • "Answered customer enquiries" as the description of a whole role
  • No volume figure, so the reader can't judge the environment
  • No quality score, in a job that is measured on quality daily
  • Omitting saves and retention, which give the role commercial weight
  • Leaving out process improvements, the main route to promotion
  • A long list of soft skills where the metrics should be

Customer Service Representative resume FAQs

How do I make customer service sound impressive?

Stop describing the duties and quote the scoreboard. Contacts per day, CSAT against target, first-contact resolution, saves — these turn an interchangeable role description into a specific performance record. Then add one improvement you made to the system rather than to a single ticket.

What if my employer didn't track CSAT?

Use whatever was measured — QA scores, handling time relative to the team, escalation rate, or the fact that you were given the hardest queue. Recognition works too: being selected for the complaints team is an assessment of your quality, made by someone else.

Does customer service experience transfer to other careers?

Strongly, and it's under-sold. Support experience is directly relevant to sales, account management, customer success, IT support and operations. Lead with the transferable parts — retention, systems knowledge, de-escalation, documentation — and name the target role in your summary.

Should I list a second language?

Definitely, and near the top of your skills. Bilingual support is often a paid differential and frequently a hard requirement, so it's one of the few skills that can move you to the front of the queue on its own.
